Help Local Seniors! Volunteer to Offer a Free Ride!
posted about 1 year ago by Human_Services_Department from Sonoma County Human Services Department
Our older adult citizens are the generation that put America on the road, a fact from which we have all benefitted. Most seniors will outlive their ability to drive and they need our help to get to important places such as doctor appointments or grocery shopping. Now that they are in need of a ride, we can express our gratitude by volunteering to help them get where they need to go.
Help your community by becoming a volunteer driver serving residents age 60 or older and people with disabilities. There are several throughout the county, and you can train as a volunteer driver with one near you. You’ll drive your own car, provide your own gas and make a difference in someone’s life.
With the recent devastation of the fires, our community needs to support older adults now more than ever. Says one rider, “This is an excellent service, I am grateful that this program exists. With not a lot of family support, it makes it possible for me to get to needed medical appointments, social events and other services.”
Volunteer drivers benefit too. “Our clients are so grateful and so kind to us,” says one volunteer. “We learn about them and their lives. We’re enriched beyond compare.”
